Domain Pointers
Domain pointers are a useful feature that allows you to forward additional domain names to your primary website. This can help consolidate traffic and ensure visitors using different domain names are redirected seamlessly.
Accessing Domain Pointers
To set up domain pointers:
- Log in to your control panel.
- Navigate to the "Advanced Tools" section.
- Click on the "Domain Pointers" icon.
Setting Up a Domain Pointer
-
Prepare the Domain:
- Before setting up the pointer, ensure that the domain you want to forward has its name servers updated to match those of your main website. This change must be made through your domain registrar.
-
Create the Pointer:
- Enter the domain you want to point to your main site in the Source Domain field.
- For example, if your main website is
site-helper.com
and you ownhite-selper.com
, enteringhite-selper.com
will redirect all its visitors tosite-helper.com
. - Click "Add" to save the pointer.
- Wait for Propagation:
- Note that it may take up to 72 hours for the domain pointer to become fully active, depending on DNS propagation.
Why Use Domain Pointers?
- Brand Protection: Redirect visitors from similar or misspelled versions of your domain (e.g.,
site-helper.net
) to your main site. - Marketing Campaigns: Use multiple domains for campaigns and point them to your main website.
- Simplified User Experience: Ensure users accessing any of your domains land on the correct website.
Managing Existing Domain Pointers
Once you've set up domain pointers, they will appear in a list on the Domain Pointers page. You can:
- Remove a Pointer: Click the delete option next to the pointer to stop redirection for that domain.
- Add Additional Pointers: Follow the same steps as above to add more domains to the list.
Conclusion
Domain pointers are an effective way to manage multiple domain names and ensure all traffic is directed to your primary website. By setting them up correctly, you can enhance your site's accessibility and maintain control over your brand's online presence. Remember to check DNS propagation times and test your setup after making changes.
