Certificate Installation Requirements
To enable SSL on your site, specific requirements must be met. This guide outlines what you’ll need to install and use SSL certificates effectively, whether you're using shared, self-signed, or purchased certificates.
Key Requirements for SSL
- Dedicated IP Address
- Your site must have its own static (dedicated) IP address.
- Without a dedicated IP, you’ll encounter this error when accessing the SSL menu:
"Could not execute your request
Details: You are not allowed to modify your SSL." - Contact your web host to check if they offer dedicated IPs. Note that some web hosts charge extra for this feature.
Why Is a Dedicated IP Necessary?
- Compatibility: Certain SSL certificates, like Triple DES certificates, don’t work properly without a dedicated IP when using DirectAdmin.
Types of SSL Certificates
1. Server’s Shared or Self-Signed Certificates
- These certificates are free but are not trusted by browsers (i.e., users may see warnings).
- Requirements for installation:
- A dedicated IP address
- SSL access enabled by your web host
- Awareness of the limitations of non-trusted certificates
2. Purchased Certificates
- These certificates are trusted and eliminate browser warnings.
- Requirements for installation:
- A dedicated IP address
- SSL access enabled by your web host
- Knowledge of how to purchase and install trusted certificates
What to Do Next
- Confirm with your hosting provider if a dedicated IP address is available for your domain.
- Decide whether you’ll use a self-signed certificate (free) or purchase a trusted SSL certificate.
