How to Create Subdomains on DirectAdmin

A subdomain allows you to organize different sections of your website. Creating subdomains on DirectAdmin is a straightforward process. Follow the steps below to create a new subdomain for your domain.

Steps to Create a Subdomain

Step 1: Access the Subdomains Section

  1. Log in to DirectAdmin.
  2. From the dashboard, click Subdomain Management under Your Account panel.
  3. Click on the Add Subdomain button

Step 2: Create a New Subdomain

  1. In the Subdomain field, enter the name of your desired subdomain. For example, if your main domain is sitehelper.com, you could create newsub.sitehelper.com.

  2. Under the Document Root section, you will have the following options:

    • Default: This option will set the Document Root to the default directory for your domain (typically, /public_html/).
    • Legacy: This will use the legacy directory structure for subdomains, if supported by your server configuration.
    • Custom: Choose this if you want to specify a custom directory where the subdomain’s files will be stored. You can enter a custom path like /public_html/newsub/ or any other desired folder.
  3. After entering the subdomain name and selecting the Document Root option, click the Add Subdomain button.

Wait for the Subdomain to Propagate

Once you've created the subdomain, it may take up to five minutes for it to become active. This allows the new subdomain to propagate across the server and be accessible via the web.

Important Notes

  • Make sure the main domain is active before creating subdomains.
  • If you want the subdomain to point to a specific directory, consider using the Custom Document Root option.
  • The Default option is suitable if you want the subdomain to inherit the root directory of the main domain.
  • If you experience issues with subdomain propagation, wait a few minutes and refresh your browser.
